Xawery Wolski: Recent Sculptures Xawery Wolski: Recent Sculptures
Originally from Poland, Wolski has worked in Italy, France, South Korea, Peru and Mexico and has had his work recognized in many more countries throughout the world. With a thorough knowledge of the particular issues pertinent to each place he’s made his home, he employs a primordial material, fired clay -- terra cotta --, which immediately establishes a strong link with the viewer.
“I am quite a world traveler. In Peru and Mexico I have been investigating the ancient ways of using the earth to sculpt and to build, and its complex functions (utilitarian, religious, ritualistic). My interest was to combine the pre-Columbian techniques into a contemporary sculpture, meaning that the old, ancient, anonymous expressions in art could be revalued, and the dialogue in time continues. . .”
This philosophy is illustrated in Wolski’s pieces exhibited at LongHouse Pavilion from July 29 to September 16.
This exhibition is generously supported by Cowles
Charitable Trust and Edward R. Roberts Family Foundation.
