With my installation I wanted to illustrate the fact as we grow our view of the world changes. I chose to create a tree growing out of the pupil of an eye to illustrate the above message. The eye has had many meanings throughout history such as window into the human soul and it also represents knowledge. The tree itself symbolizes growth in life and life itself, the more you see the more you grow.
I was inspired by various sources such as artists Andy Goldsworthy, Robert Smithson, and landscape architect Peter Fink. Andy Goldsworthy inspired me with his temporary artistic uses of natural materials he finds in the surrounding environment, making his installations indigenous and sustainable. Both Robert Smithson and Peter Fink create their artistic pieces by manipulating the earth. Peter Fink also uses inspiration he received from the human body in his work at Northala Fields, one of the largest parks built in England in a century.
My installation features a mound of earth in the shape of an eye. I created a pupil using stones and ferns that I found in the surrounding area. In the center of the pupil I planted a cedar tree, which was planted near my installation. Cedar has represented incorruptibility throughout history. If you follow your own path, your life will be true.
Throughout the year, I have visited Longhouse Reserve numerous times. I have been inspired in many ways, not just on this project, but also on many others. Longhouse is a great place to see, touch, and experience art in its finest forms. There are many pieces such as the chairs made of living trees and the grass amphitheatre that have inspired me in my latest work. Longhouse’s displays are fluid and have great subject variety. Every time I go, installations have moved, new ones have been added and the landscape has been altered. I appreciate how we are given free access to experience such great art, an incredible environment, and the opportunity to show off my artwork.
