The LongHouse Reserve Junior Council hosted their 2016 Summer Benefit, the Sonic Garden Party on Saturday, August 20.
The evening featured innovative music by Bora Yoon and Colin Self, courtesy of National Sawdust.
Harry Bertoia's "Sonambient" sound installation gave the evening an air of cool as archivist John Brien created a unique sound experience that filled the gardens.
Bora Yoon, a sound artist and TED fellow, performed a site-specific electroacoustic musical soundscape using her own voice, viola, Tibetan singing bowls, metronomes, cellphones and many other items, some not normally associated with music making.
Musician Colin Self performed a series of vocal and electronic compositions and narratives assembled specifically for the transition of dusk into night. Disguised in nature, Colin emerged from seemingly out of nowhere, weaving through the trees, captivating everyone and finished in a space of illuminated intimacy. Bravo!
The benefit event included a silent auction of hand-crafted interactive sonic sculptures by local artists Scott Bluedorn, Fitzhugh Karol, Nick Martin and Nico Yektai.
At the end of the evening a rousing drum circle was held in our amphitheater, providing a perfect way for guests to dance their way back home.
Thank you to our amazing Junior Council for their hard work in creating this event for LongHouse. We also thank our sponsors, Morris Kitchen, Boylan's Soda and Montauk Brewing Company.
