Mark Mennin
Art in the Garden, Sculpture Court
The history of the carved stone head is generally about stasis. The carved stone object is static and meditative in its quiet dialogue with the viewer who relates to its recognizable form.
Mark Mennin’s inverted carvings provide some extra layers of movement, interactivity and visual illusion that are not usually associated with stone carving.
Arguably one of the most accomplished stone carvers around, his knowledge of the figure and his material provide a new fresh look at an age-old practice and its possibilities in human portraiture.
