Surf Craft

DESIGN AND THE CULTURE OF BOARD RIDING CURATED BY RICHARD KENVIN, ORGANIZED BY MINGEI INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM

Standing alone, surfboards are often striking examples of functional design. Together, over time, they tell a compelling story about the evolution of an important world wide art form.

Surf Craft captures the influences behind the design of board riding, from the alaia boards of ancient Hawaii to the obscure bathing boards of England, Japan, and Africa, to post-war hydrodynamic planing hulls from southern California. This expansive exhibition of 40-50 surfboards built from the late ‘40’s to the present day is curated by surf historian Richard Kenvin. A plethora of weekend activities is on the drawing board, welcoming surfing enthusiasts and admirers from eastern Long Island and beyond.
