A pioneer of American modernism, Gaston Lachaise was an American sculptor of French birth. Known for his voluptuous bronze female nudes, his “Standing Woman” graced Black Mirror during the 2011-12 season. We are thrilled to welcome his “Heroic Man” (1930-1934) to LongHouse. Completed shortly before his death, this monumental male nude stands more than 9 feet tall. Lachaise states “I aim to express the glorification of the human being, of the human body, of the human spirit, with all there is of daring magnificence.” We are grateful to the Lachaise Foundation for making this installation possible.
