LongHouse Talks: Artistic Journey and Journals of David Geiser (May 17)

$25.00

Join us for an intimate exploration of the artistic legacy of David Geiser (1947-2020), presented by his son, Jake Ruehl on Saturday, May 17 at 3:00pm. This captivating talk will unveil "GEISER," a compelling book that brings to life the rich tapestry of David's 25 journals, spanning from 1976 to 2020. All attendees will receive a free digtial copy of the book and catalog of art.

David Geiser's journals chronicle a transformative odyssey across continents and cultures, from the vibrant underground comix scene of 1970s San Francisco to classical painting studies at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, through Spain, Morocco, Greece, and beyond, before finally settling in New York City and, later, the Hamptons.

Geiser's artistic journey was as diverse as his travels. His early career in underground comix, creating titles like "Uncle Sham" and "Demented Pervert," evolved into abstract expressionism in the 1980s. Over time, he developed a unique style incorporating shellac, pitch, tar, and found materials. David Geiser's work has been praised for its ability to transform "matter into spirit," with his artistic process deeply influenced by nature, from trout streams to ocean shores.

Jake Ruehl's presentation will offer selected passages illuminating Geiser's inspirations, struggles, and triumphs, providing insights into the creative process of a true artist. This talk promises to be a unique opportunity to understand the inner workings of an artist's mind and the experiences that shaped his distinctive vision. Whether you're an art enthusiast, a lover of personal narratives, or simply curious about the creative journey, this talk will offer invaluabel insights into the life and work or a remarkable artist.

Long Island Modern: Art Villages (May 25)
Long Island Modern: Art Villages (May 25)

Long Island Modern: Art Villages (May 25)

$25.00

From the windswept slopes of Shinnecock Hills to the domes of Drop City, artists have long carved out spaces to live, work, and reimagine community. In this lively illustrated talk and conversation, cultural critic Alastair Gordon and a special guest trace the evolution of North American art colonies, enclaves, and communes from 1879 to the present. These creative experiments - some accidental, others carefully planned around shared ideals - have left lasting imprints on land use, architecture, and real estate markets, from the Hamptons to the Colorado high desert. Why do some of these communities thrive while others vanish? And what can they teach us about freedom, collaboration, and the fine line between inspiration and entropy?

With a special focus on Long Island, the talk highlights how artist-led development helped shape the region’s identity. Southampton’s Art Village (1891) transformed what was once dismissed as “wasteland” into a vibrant center of plein-air painting. Decades later, artists like Pollock and Motherwell brought new energy to the Hamptons, catalyzing waves of cultural and commercial change. From rustic cottages to salvaged domes, these spaces reflect both the ambition and fragility of artistic utopias - offering a lens on how creative communities grapple with planning, property, and personality in pursuit of a more inspired way of living.

Join LongHouse Reserve and Robert A.M. Stern Architects for a presentation by RAMSA Partner Michael Jones on the architecture and history of Central Park South. This talk will highlight the vibrant characters who left their mark in the area, including larger-than-life developers like Harry Black and Steve Ross, visionary designers such as Emery Roth and Dorothy Draper, and notable socialites like Truman Capote. Michael will examine the architectural features of iconic buildings like the Hampshire House, the Hotel St. Moritz, and the Sherry-Netherland Hotel, which have played a pivotal role in shaping mixed-use, high-rise residential spaces. He will also discuss how this historical context influenced the design of three RAMSA projects - 15 Central Park West, 220 Central Park South, and 520 Park Avenue.

About the Architect
Michael Jones is a partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA) and designs many of the firm’s most prominent multifamily residential projects. His projects in New York City include 15 Central Park West, 220 Central Park South, 520 Park Avenue, as well as several other apartment houses in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan. Internationally, he has spearheaded the design of modern classical residential communities in Lima, Peru, and the design of the Hong Kong Golf and Tennis Academy. Michael is the co-author of the monograph City Living: Apartment Houses by Robert A.M. Stern Architects (2016). A registered architect in the State of New York, Michael is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, the Urban Land Institute, and the Congress for the New Urbanism. Michael co-founded and chairs RAMSA's Q+ Committee - the office’s LGBTQ+ group that promotes the inclusion and acceptance of the queer community in architecture - and serves as a board member for LongHouse Reserve and The Ali Forney Center.

The Larsen Salon Series, offered by LongHouse Reserve in honor of its founder Jack Lenor Larsen (1927-2020), carries on a tradition of conversations, presentations, and lectures by designers, architects, and artists working at the intersection of art, architecture, design, and craft. We offer these salons in Manhattan and East Hampton, at various spaces, to engage all of us in important dialogues of meaning in our complex world.

InsiderOutsider: New Voices in the Art World is a dynamic conversation series spotlighting underrepresented artists who challenge convention, expand the boundaries of contemporary art, and invite deeper dialogue. Moderated by artist and curator Mago, this year’s series is presented in collaboration with Jeremy Dennis of Ma’s House, a center for Indigenous and BIPOC artists. Together, we’ll explore the creative practices and personal narratives shaping today’s evolving art landscape.

Sunday, June 8 | 3-5:00 PM
Jake Kimble is a multidisciplinary Chipewyan (Dënesųłıné) artist and curator from Treaty 8 territory in the Northwest Territories whose practice revolves around acts of self-care, self-repair, and gender-based ideological refusal. Kimble belongs to the Deninu K’ue First Nation and currently lives, works, and shoots on the stolen territory of xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Holding both a degree in Acting from Vancouver Film School as well as a BFA in Photography from Emily Carr University of Art + Design Kimble imbues his work with a sense of theatricality and levity, which are core principles in their practice. Through a clever subversion of the everyday aesthetics Kimble also plays with language and ambiguity – something that comes natural with them being a two-spirited artist. Using a funny bone as a tool, Kimble excavates themes of existentialism, narcissism, and the strange, offering an invitation to the audience to examine the absurdities that exist within the everyday so that they too may exhale, unclench, and even chuckle in the spaces where laughter is often lost.

They have completed residencies at the Burrard Art Foundation, Vancouver, and the Banff Centre for Arts + Creativity, Alberta, and was the co-curator of the 2024 Contemporary Native Art Biennial (BACA). Kimble’s work was featured on the King and Shaw Street billboards for the 2023 Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, and was included in a group exhibition at Audain Art Museum alongside Adad Hannah, Michelle Sound, and Jin-me Yoon for the 2024 Capture Photography Festival. Kimble's work has been exhibited in various group and solo exhibitions across Canada, and can be found in notable collections such as the TD Collection, the Scotiabank Collection, and in the Art Gallery of Hamilton.

Jeremy Dennis & Ma's House: The Ma’s House project is being led by artist and photographer Jeremy Dennis. Dennis is a contemporary fine art photographer and a tribal member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation in Southampton, NY. In his work, he explores indigenous identity, culture, and assimilation.

Artist Walk & Talk: Jill Platner on Talking With Trees (June 15)
Artist Walk & Talk: Jill Platner on Talking With Trees (June 15)

Artist Walk & Talk: Jill Platner on Talking With Trees (June 15)

$25.00

On Sunday, June 15 at 2:00pm, join us for a conversation between artist Jill Platner and creative strategist Sally Singer, president of Art + Commerce, followed by a guided walk through the Dawn Redwood Forest to view Platner’s sculptural installation Talking with Trees alongside the artist herself.

When Jill started working on the sculptures that now comprise her show, Talking with Trees, she envisioned seeing them as multiples in variation; wanting the viewing to feel more like an open ended experience rather than just a decorative flourish. Now having the opportunity to share these works with the public, she can’t imagine a more perfect spot than LongHouse Reserve to show them. Peppered throughout the grounds, with eyes directed toward the trees, you’ll find sculptures in various sizes tucked within their branches. Like fractals found in nature these works seemingly replicate a similar pattern, with their curves and bends, yet each one is singular in design and movement, just as the trees they are integrated with. Jill strives to create a loving and lively experience where people can pause and engage more personally with the abundance of nature around them. A meditative practice for both maker and viewer, to serve as a reminder of our duty to conserve and celebrate our trees.

About the Artist
Jill Platner has been making jewelry and sculpture in NYC since 1993. The forests, fields and streams of Massachusetts and Maine provided childhood playgrounds, and later, inspiration for her metal work, which is grounded in the natural world. Jill received her BFA from Parsons School of Design, N.Y. and started selling her jewelry immediately - sometimes straight off her body while walking the streets of New York. The original Jill Platner store opened in 1998 at 113 Crosby Street. The store and studio now reside under the same historic roof at 165 Crosby, where Jill and her team continue to fabricate and showcase her jewelry and sculpture.

About Sally Singer
Since 2023, Sally Singer has served as President of Art + Commerce, the leading creative agency representing artists in fashion, beauty, and luxury, overseeing teams in New York, Paris, and London. Previously, she was Head of Fashion Direction at Amazon, advising global leadership on style and innovation across its fashion and fitness division. From 2013–2020, Singer led American Vogue’s digital expansion, launching Vogue Runway, growing its YouTube to over six million subscribers, and transforming the Met Gala into a global digital event. Earlier, she was editor in chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, and before that spent over a decade at Vogue as Fashion News/Features Director. She has also held senior roles at New York Magazine, Elle, and British Vogue, and began her career at the London Review of Books. Singer is a trustee of FIT and a graduate of UC Berkeley.
