Be a MakerMentor! (Oct 26)

Sculptural Butterflies with artist Silvia Salgado

Cost:

FREE – $20.00 per person

Duration:

2h

Saturday, October 26 | 2-4:00 pm

Enjoy an afternoon of hands-on creativity and discovery inspired in the work of MakerMentors Jack Lenor Larsen, Preston Douglas Boyer, Oscar Molina, and Silvia Salgado. MakerMentors highlights mentorship and creative practices by introducing artists and their work through observation, dialogue, and hands-on creation.

Artist Silvia Salgado will personally guide participants in making sculptural butterflies from leaves and twigs, taking inspiration from her subtle installation of yellow butterflies, titled Mauricio Babilonia’s Love, based on a character in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude.

This full afternoon of creative expression will include other art projects with collage, paint, modeling clay, textile, yarn, and foraged material from the garden as we explore and appreciate Larsen’s textile designs, Boyer’s TreeHuggers installations, and Molina’s Children of the World sculptures. BCurious: EyeThink Discovery Journals will be provided for continued exploration, writing, drawing, and discussion.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. Small children may need adult assistance with certain projects.

This afternoon culminates this year’s MakerMentors program as a new, ongoing educational initiative developed in collaboration with BethGayle Coplan/BSquared Projects.

The program is made possible with support from Agnes Gund, the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning, and County Legislator Ann Welker.
